Marilyn Verschuure Sacred Spiritual conscious Funeral Celebrant for Alternative Ceremonies

Q. Should younger members of the family be included in giving a reading?
A. Younger members can participate if they are comfortable with the idea. I will be there to make sure that their contribution is supported. Sub ceremonies are often the best way to incorporate younger family members. Sometimes, two younger people will do a joint reading or joint tribute or participate in a sub cerremony that is spiritually appropriate.

Q. Will my celebrant include religious content in the funeral service if that’s what our family wants?
A. I will be more than happy to include religious content if that is what the family wants. Many people, while having no special church affiliation, take comfort from some religious content in the service. Especially for the comfort other family members who know that their loved ones spiritual beliefs are respected and honoured..

Q. Is it possible to include culturally or spiritually appropriate symbols, rituals, music or readings in the funeral service?
A. Culturally and spiritually appropriate rituals are appropriate within the restrictions of the chapel. I will guide you through this aspect. I have traveled the world and encountered a vast array of different religions, cultures and traditions as well as study them at university. I can integrate their special ceremonial styles or elements of their ritual into the ceremony we design together.

Q. Will the celebrant help us with the design of a Program for the mourners attending the service?
A. Generally the family prepares and prints the Order of Service or Funeral Program. I will be happy to advise with the preparation.

What do We do?

Q. How long does a typical funeral ceremony usually last?
A.
About 20 to 30 minutes but if there are a number of eulogies, the funeral director can book the chapel for a longer period.

Q. May I choose my own celebrant or do I have to use the celebrant recommended by the funeral director?
A.
You may choose your own celebrant and inform your funeral director who that is to be. You are not obliged to use the celebrant recommended by the funeral director.

Q. Who pays the funeral celebrant?
A. If you choose your own celebrant you pay them directly.

Q. Will you visit me in my home to discuss the content of the funeral service?
A. I will visit you in your home or if you prefer we can meet at my home to discuss the funeral service.

Q. How will my you dress?
A.
I will dress in a professional way to show respect to the occasion or in any manner or style that fits your alternative funeral. I am extremely open.

Q. Will you help us with the choice of readings and music for the service?
A.
I will have many resources and will be able to suggest readings and music and spiritually appropriate formats or structure to suit your alternative ideas. I can make recommendations when we meet to plan the service.

Q. Will you write the eulogy if we give you the information?
A.
When we meet to plan the funeral, we can discuss your relative’s life and I can express their personality, and alternative conscious sacred and spiritual beliefs and capture their essence in a finely crafted eulogy.

Q. Is it possible for us to have a Power Point presentation about the life of our relative?
A. Many crematoria chapels have facilities for Power Point. Tell your funeral director if you want to be able to have this.

Q. Is it appropriate for family members or friends to give a eulogy or a reading?
A.
It is very appropriate for family members or friends to participate in the service as it makes it more personal. I can advise and guide you of the best way to incorporate these sub-ceremonies and alternatives rituals into the service.
